Overview

  • A vegetation fire dubbed the Calaveras Fire broke out Tuesday afternoon near the 5500 block of Calaveras Road in Sunol.
  • By 5:20 p.m. the blaze had burned roughly 15 acres and crews achieved 50% containment after halting forward progress.
  • Flames advanced on both sides of Calaveras and Welch Creek roads and pushed into a nearby creek, complicating access.
  • Cal Fire, Alameda County Fire Department, Fremont Fire Department and the California Highway Patrol responded under a two-alarm declaration.
  • Crews remain on scene conducting mop-up and containment operations in the steep brush terrain as late-summer dryness heightens wildfire risks.
