Overview
- Volunteers from Exploring With A Mission and Adventures With Purpose used side-scan sonar near Cedar Beach boat ramp on June 30 to locate a submerged PT Cruiser and recovered initial bone fragments.
- Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau divers retrieved additional human remains and craned the barnacle-encrusted vehicle ashore on July 1.
- All recovered remains have been sent to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and autopsy.
- Detectives suspect the remains may belong to Robert Long, who went missing in December 2010, but officials have not yet made a definitive identification.
- The discovery marks the third vehicle recovery of the current mission and the 16th for volunteer diver Bill McIntosh as teams plan further cold-case dives along Long Island and the East Coast.
