Sunken PT Cruiser Raised at Cedar Beach After Human Remains Found

Forensic experts are examining the remains to determine identity and cause of death with no foul play suspected.

Exploring With a Mission, a sonar dive team that searches for missing people in vehicles, was out looking for several people on Long Island when they said they turned their focus to a 15-year-old case on the North Shore of Suffolk County. The crew said they went out about 50 yards from the harbor's shore when they discovered the car. (Exploring With a Mission via Facebook)

Overview

  • Volunteers from Exploring With A Mission and Adventures With Purpose used side-scan sonar near Cedar Beach boat ramp on June 30 to locate a submerged PT Cruiser and recovered initial bone fragments.
  • Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau divers retrieved additional human remains and craned the barnacle-encrusted vehicle ashore on July 1.
  • All recovered remains have been sent to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office for positive identification and autopsy.
  • Detectives suspect the remains may belong to Robert Long, who went missing in December 2010, but officials have not yet made a definitive identification.
  • The discovery marks the third vehicle recovery of the current mission and the 16th for volunteer diver Bill McIntosh as teams plan further cold-case dives along Long Island and the East Coast.
