Sunderland Confirms Road Closures and Travel Plan for Radio 1’s Big Weekend

Officials want to move about 100,000 people safely with minimal disruption to residents.

Overview

  • Sunderland City Council, which confirmed the event traffic plan Thursday, will close roads from 8am on Friday 22 May to 1am each day, with full reopening by 1am on Monday 25 May.
  • The A183 between the A19 junction and Chislehurst Road will shut to general traffic, with local buses allowed until 9pm and stops on that stretch suspended from 10am Friday until Monday morning.
  • There is no general parking at Herrington Country Park, with only pre-booked accessible spaces available and a permit-only Resident Protection Zone in nearby streets.
  • Organisers direct festivalgoers to pre-book shuttle buses from Heworth, Park Lane and Durham stations, and warn that Sunday will be especially busy because Sunderland play Chelsea at the Stadium of Light.
  • A clearway will cover the full A183 and B1286, and all A19 lay-bys between the A690 and A1231 will close for the weekend to keep traffic moving.
