Summer Book Sale Underway at Monumento a la Revolución Ahead of UNAM Remate

Organizers hope deep discounts will save thousands of unsold books from destruction by easing storage tax burdens.

Overview

  • The 20th Gran Remate de Libros y Películas runs through August 17 at the Monumento a la Revolución with free entry and items priced from 10 to 150 pesos across roughly 375 stands.
  • About 190 to 201 exhibitors—including Fondo de Cultura Económica, Penguin Random House and independent booksellers—are collaborating to rescue inventory that might otherwise be discarded.
  • UNAM’s Remate de Libros opens August 18 at the Paseo de las Humanidades offering around 45,000 copies of 4,500 titles with discounts up to 80 percent.
  • The university sale will include workshops, chess matches and dance performances as part of its cultural program to engage a broad audience.
  • Organizers continue to press for tax exemptions on stored books to prevent publishers from shredding unsold stock and to sustain future remates.
