Overview
- On Tuesday afternoon, officers responded to a 911 call at a Bay Shore home and shot 33-year-old Joseph Restaino after he emerged wielding a sword and ignored orders to drop the weapon.
- Restaino had told dispatchers he was holding hostages and was suicidal, a ruse that led officers to deploy a Taser which failed to subdue him before they opened fire.
- No hostages were found inside the residence and Restaino was transported to South Shore University Hospital, where he underwent surgery and remains under medical supervision.
- The two officers involved received trauma-related evaluations at a hospital and no other injuries were reported in the North Bay Shore neighborhood.
- The shooting is the third police-involved armed encounter in Suffolk County in recent weeks and has prompted joint investigations by internal affairs, the homicide squad and the state attorney general’s office.
