Police on Long Island say an officer shot and killed a man who tried to stab someone already being treated for a neck wound.

Overview

  • A 29-year-old man stabbed a 44-year-old victim in the neck at around 8:30 a.m. Sunday behind a strip mall on Middle Country Road.
  • Officers arrived minutes later to find the victim receiving aid when the suspect emerged from nearby woods wielding a 10- to 12-inch knife and lunged at the injured man.
  • One officer opened fire, striking the attacker, who was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital and pronounced dead.
  • The stabbing victim is in stable condition with an expected full recovery while two officers were treated for tinnitus following the shooting.
  • Suffolk County’s Homicide Squad, Internal Affairs Bureau and the New York State Attorney General’s Office have launched a joint probe under standard protocol.
