Sudan's Warring Parties Agree to Ceasefire and Political Dialogue

The agreement, brokered by African regional body IGAD, paves the way for a meeting between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

  • Sudan's warring parties, the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have agreed to a ceasefire and a political dialogue aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.
  • The agreement was secured by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), an African regional body mediating the conflict.
  • Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, have agreed to meet within 15 days to initiate confidence-building measures.
  • The conflict, which began in mid-April, has devastated the capital, Khartoum, and led to ethnic killings in Darfur.
  • The war erupted over an internationally backed plan to merge the RSF into the army and launch a transition towards elections.
