Sucamec Reports Over 3,500 Illegal Guns Seized in Peru This Year

Officials say the joint push targets violent crime by taking weapons linked to offenses out of circulation.

Overview

  • The agency says its 2026 total has passed 3,500 firearms after control and inspection raids nationwide.
  • In the northern region of Piura, seizures reached 3,929 since 2025, according to superintendent Rafael Ríos Zavala.
  • More than 2,121 of the confiscated guns were used in crimes, which Sucamec says shows the threat these weapons pose.
  • About 500 firearms have been taken off the streets in Piura so far this year during joint operations with the National Police, the Public Ministry and Customs.
  • Confiscated guns will be melted into playground and gym equipment to keep them from returning to illegal markets.
