Subaru Reveals First In‑House EV Platform With 510‑HP AWD Prototype

The company says the new battery, motors and a custom AMD‑based electronic control unit aim to preserve Subaru’s AWD and safety character and could begin appearing in production from 2029.

Overview

  • The prototype Subaru showed on October 18 uses two Aisin e-axles to produce about 380 kW (roughly 509–510 hp) and is claimed to sprint 0–100 km/h in under four seconds.
  • Battery work with Panasonic Energy produced a pack made from roughly 4,000 cylindrical cells that Subaru says is about 25% lighter and targets around 20% higher energy density, but capacity, range and charging figures were not disclosed.
  • Subaru is developing an integrated electronic control unit built around a custom AMD chip to consolidate ADAS, powertrain, chassis and infotainment, enable over‑the‑air updates and add AI features to its EyeSight system.
  • The company confirmed it will sell only EVs in Europe by the end of 2027 while it delays some global EV targets beyond 2030 and redirects part of its planned ¥1.5 trillion electrification budget toward hybrids and more efficient petrol engines.
  • The program aims to shorten development time and reduce reliance on Toyota by using specialist suppliers for key components, with some platform technologies expected to reach production from about 2029 and broader implications for Subaru buyers and dealers in Europe and elsewhere.
