Subaru Ends Legacy Production After 36 Years as Final Sedan Leaves Indiana Line

Lafayette capacity now shifts to Forester manufacturing starting in October.

Overview

  • The last Legacy, a Magnetite Gray Limited with a 2.5-liter 182-hp boxer engine and CVT all-wheel drive, was completed at SIA in Lafayette, Indiana.
  • Subaru says the final car rolled off the A-line just after 3 p.m. ET on September 12 and publicly confirmed the end of production on September 18.
  • Over nearly 36 years the plant built approximately 1,398,994 Legacy sedans and wagons, beginning with the first U.S.-built Subaru on September 11, 1989.
  • Subaru confirmed the last unit will be sold through a dealer rather than kept for the company’s heritage collection.
  • The company cites a sustained consumer shift toward SUVs and crossovers as the reason for discontinuing its longest-running model line.
