StylesVille Barbershop & Beauty Salon Receives L.A. Landmark Plaque in Pacoima

The recognition comes through a City–Getty effort to safeguard overlooked African American historic places.

Overview

  • A plaque was unveiled Oct. 11 at the family-run shop by owner Ollie Carter and her grandson, Gregory Faucett, joined by Councilmember Monica Rodriguez and Getty representatives.
  • Rodriguez said the designation permanently protects the site and recognized it as the oldest Black-owned business in the San Fernando Valley.
  • Founded in 1957 by Freddie and Ollie Carter and moved to its current location in 1977, StylesVille remains under Carter family stewardship.
  • The barbershop has long served as a social hub and information pipeline for Pacoima’s Black community during segregation and subsequent decades.
  • The landmark status is part of the African American Historic Places, Los Angeles project, which recently advanced several Black heritage site designations citywide.
