Study Traces Dispersed Stone of Destiny Fragments, Including Piece Linked to Alex Salmond

The peer-reviewed paper reconstructs how a secret 1951 repair yielded dozens of keepsakes now surfacing through public leads.

Overview

  • University of Stirling researcher Sally Foster has published findings in The Antiquaries Journal mapping more than 30 fragments created during the 1950–51 break and repair.
  • Her study concludes stonemason Robert “Bertie” Gray gathered 34 pieces during the clandestine fix after the stone was taken from Westminster Abbey.
  • Foster proposes the ‘XXXV’ mark on the underside of the stone counts the 34 fragments plus the main block, based on masons’ practices and Gray’s access.
  • Documented recipients include Alex Salmond and former SNP MPs Winnie Ewing and Margo MacDonald, with another fragment held in an Australian museum.
  • Lord Forsyth has described one piece as stolen property, yet authorities have not brought prosecutions over possession, and Foster continues to invite information to fill gaps.
