Study Finds One in Three LGTBI+ Spaniards Have Left or Consider Leaving Home Over Safety Fears

A first national study quantifies the recent 'sexilio', prompting ministry collaboration.

Overview

  • The Federación Estatal LGTBI+ and the University of Salamanca surveyed 800 people, finding 13% relocated for lack of safety and 21.5% contemplated it.
  • Among those under 30, 40% have either moved or seriously considered moving due to rejection, discrimination or fear.
  • Trans and racialized people face higher displacement rates than other groups within the community.
  • Relocation often leads to hardship, with higher rates of homelessness, inadequate housing, persistent fear and ongoing depression among those displaced.
  • The federation says it will work with the Ministerio de Transición Ecológica y Reto Demográfico on territorial, intersectional policies to prevent sexilio, particularly in rural and small-city areas.
