Study Finds Obstetricians Rarely Refer Pregnant Patients to Allergy Specialists

Authors urge clearer referral guidance to improve pregnancy care.

Overview

  • A survey at a large academic center found 23.1% of obstetric physicians never referred pregnant patients to allergy and immunology and 42.3% referred only once per year.
  • Referrals most commonly addressed suspected medication allergies, followed by hives (urticaria) and asthma.
  • Reported obstacles included uncertainty about appropriate referral indications and long wait times for specialist appointments.
  • Respondents requested institutional guidelines (76%), provider resources (72%), and workshops (64%) to support care decisions during pregnancy.
  • The results were presented at the 2025 ACAAI Annual Scientific Meeting and are slated for publication in Annals of Allergy Asthma & Immunology.
