Study Finds 10% of Donors Provide Nearly Half of NGO Funding in Spain

A new CaixaBankLa CaixaUPF analysis shows Spain's charitable funding hinges on a small cohort of older, middle‑class donors.

Overview

  • About one in ten donors, identified as 'superdonors', contribute roughly 47% of the money received by NGOs.
  • Funding is highly concentrated by organisation, with the top 25 NGOs taking 80% of donations and the top 100 receiving 93%.
  • Nearly 90% of donated euros go to four areas, led by international cooperation at about 40%, followed by health, social services and religion.
  • Six in ten Spaniards donated in the past year with an average gift of €25 per donation, and giving rises 21% in December.
  • The donor base skews older, urban and higher income, and superdonors—mostly middle class—give about €740 a year, commit around 2.3% of disposable income and donate with high regularity.
