Studio Museum in Harlem Unveils First Purpose-Built Home Ahead of Nov. 15 Public Opening

Adjaye Associates’ 82,000-square-foot building foregrounds mission-driven furnishings by Black and diasporic designers curated to shape communal use of space.

Overview

  • The museum will welcome visitors on November 15 with a free Community Day that marks the debut of its new home on West 125th Street.
  • Designed by Adjaye Associates with Cooper Robertson, the seven-story facility features a stoop-like lobby, a light-filled central stair, and a landscaped rooftop terrace by Studio Zewde with Manhattan views.
  • Exhibition and Artist-in-Residence spaces have more than doubled, complemented by state-of-the-art galleries, a dedicated Education Workshop, and flexible public areas for programs and gatherings.
  • The inaugural program spans a major Tom Lloyd presentation, From Now: A Collection in Context, From the Studio: Fifty-Eight Years of Artists in Residence, and To Be a Place drawing on museum archives.
  • The $300 million project—fully fundraised with nearly a quarter from public sources—also establishes a $50 million endowment supporting operations after the seven-year closure.
