Student Team Debuts ARIA, a Modular EV Designed for DIY Repairs

The prototype is a proof of concept intended to advance right-to-repair rules for passenger cars in the EU.

Overview

  • ARIA’s architecture uses six independent, swappable battery modules totaling 12.96 kWh so a single degraded unit can be replaced.
  • Clip-on exterior panels and modular electronics let owners remove damaged parts and fit replacements at home without dealer visits.
  • A companion diagnostic app and an onboard toolbox provide step-by-step guidance for troubleshooting and repairs.
  • The city-focused prototype is rated for a 56 mph top speed and about 137 miles of range on a full charge.
  • The team has no plans to commercialize ARIA, leaving long-term performance untested, and coverage contrasts it with ElectricBrands’ delayed XBUS and Kia’s fleet-oriented PV5.
