Overview

  • MOHELA said borrowers who submitted IBR, PAYE or ICR applications before April 27 without income documentation must reapply at StudentAid.gov and will have their old forms canceled.
  • The Department of Education restored the IDR application portal at the end of March, but the May 15 status report shows more than 1.9 million submissions still awaiting review.
  • A federal appeals court’s block of the SAVE plan last summer forced over eight million borrowers into administrative forbearance and halted progress toward loan forgiveness.
  • Under a court-mandated interim agreement, the Education Department now provides monthly updates on servicers’ progress in clearing the IDR backlog.
  • Lawmakers and borrower advocates, including Senator Elizabeth Warren, are pressing for clearer guidance as concerns grow over reapplication requirements and repayment options.
