Overview
- Ghulam Haider, 22, admitted causing death by dangerous driving after his Toyota Avensis ploughed into the rear of Cliff Tamou’s stationary HGV on the M6 southbound near junction 15 on February 27.
- Cliff Tamou, 58, a grandfather of five and respected rugby community figure, had pulled over to change a blown tyre before the collision.
- Prosecutors said Haider was filming himself at speeds up to 100mph, using his phone, and not wearing his seatbelt properly at the time of the crash.
- He ignored a temporary 50mph limit and visible traffic warnings, crossed lanes and clipped a cone before failing to brake in time on the hard shoulder.
- Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court sentenced Haider to nine years and four months in prison and imposed an 11-year driving ban, noting he had no previous convictions.
