Overview
- An attacker opened fire near İnci Üzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Turgutlu on Tuesday morning, and officials say at least 11 people were wounded with two in serious condition.
- Police arrested the suspected shooter at the scene and prosecutors have taken the case into custody while two chief prosecutors were appointed to lead the inquiry.
- Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said the weapon was taken from the suspect’s grandfather’s home and that the suspect’s mother, father and grandfather have been detained for questioning.
- Investigators are examining motive, claims the student was bullied, how the firearm was stored, and whether parental supervision or legal responsibilities were breached.
- The attack comes after two school shootings in April that already prompted tighter school security and gun controls and is likely to renew debate and review of gun storage and school safety measures.
