Student Dies After Wall Collapses at Mangaluru Convention Hall

Police have filed criminal charges to determine whether overcrowding, poor maintenance or event lapses caused the collapse

Overview

  • A supporting corridor balcony wall at Rama Laxminarayana Convention Hall gave way during a crowded student union oath-taking event, sending several students from an upper floor and injuring five.
  • The 16-year-old who had been critically injured, Mohammed Shamaj, has died in hospital and four other students remain under treatment at Highland Hospital in stable condition.
  • Mangaluru South Police registered Crime No. 197/2026 after a complaint by the deceased’s father and named event organisers, including Dinaker Shetty, and the venue owner under Sections 106(1), 125(a), 125(b) and 290 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
  • Investigators are examining the building’s condition, the corridor wall that collapsed, and event arrangements to establish whether overcrowding, structural failure or negligence triggered the accident.
  • Witnesses described the hall as old and in need of renovation, and the probe could prompt stricter venue safety checks for crowded college events and similar public gatherings.
