Strong winds knock Norwegian Epic from Catania pier, passenger falls into water

Disembarkation halted for seven hours as crews replaced snapped mooring lines.

Overview

  • On May 30 in Catania, Sicily, gusts up to 60 mph pulled the Norwegian Epic from its pier, causing a passenger to fall into the water during disembarkation.
  • Crew members promptly rescued the guest, whose injuries were deemed minor and who received further treatment at a local hospital.
  • Disembarkation and embarkation were suspended until the vessel could safely re-dock, during which over 3,600 passengers were stranded ashore for more than seven hours.
  • Passengers reported sporadic communication and limited access to food and water before the ship resumed its voyage, docking in Naples on May 31.
  • The 10-day cruise, which began May 24 in Rome and included stops in Greece, Malta and France, concluded in Rome on June 3 without additional incidents.
