Parties cast the grassroots verdict as a bellwether for the 2026 Assembly race.

Overview

  • Phase I voting ran from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. across 11,168 wards in 595 local bodies in seven southern districts, covering about 1.33 crore registered voters.
  • Provisional closing figures showed robust participation, with Kottayam at 70.76%, Idukki at 70.26% and Kollam at 70.09%, while Pathanamthitta recorded about 66.78%.
  • Polling was largely peaceful, though EVM malfunctions delayed voting at several booths and polling was postponed in select wards following candidate deaths, including Pampakuda and parts of Vizhinjam.

  • Phase II will be held on December 11 across Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod—covering 12,391 wards in 604 local bodies—with counting for all phases on December 13.
