Strong Geomagnetic Storm Triggers Widespread Aurora With More Possible Tonight

Forecasters attribute the display to multiple recent solar eruptions, with peak strength still uncertain.

Overview

  • NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center is maintaining a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch for Nov. 6–7, with activity likely lingering into Nov. 8.
  • Aurora viewlines cover roughly 22 U.S. states from Alaska to the Upper Midwest and Northeast, with reports already in states including Nebraska, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
  • The U.K. Met Office issued a red alert for strong geomagnetic activity followed by a yellow watch, with visibility possible across Scotland and at times as far south as northern England and parts of central England.
  • Multiple CMEs linked to recent X- and M-class flares, including from solar Region 4273, are driving the event, with a second, slower CME expected to arrive around Nov. 8 with diminishing effects.
  • Agencies warn of manageable risks to power grids, satellites and GPS, and note that cloud cover and a bright moon may limit visibility despite active conditions.
