Strong Cold Front to Sweep Germany, Ending Short Mild Spell

The Deutscher Wetterdienst warns the front will force a rapid temperature fall, bringing widespread rain, gusty winds and a lowered Alpine snow line.

Overview

  • Germany is enjoying an unusually mild spell with daytime highs around 18–24°C but forecasters say this will end when a Kaltfront crosses the country Wednesday night into Thursday.
  • The Deutscher Wetterdienst predicts a fast temperature drop to seasonal highs of roughly 13–16°C after the front passes and a surge of polar or northwesterly air behind it.
  • Widespread rain, showers and isolated thunderstorms are expected during the frontal passage with localized heavy hourly rainfall rates and gusty winds up to about 50 km/h in exposed southern and mountain areas.
  • The Alpine snow line is forecast to fall to around 1,500 metres during the night into Friday with model runs suggesting it could sink lower locally, raising the chance of early high‑elevation snow and icy conditions on mountain routes.
  • Morning fog in valleys will continue through midweek and authorities advise using the remaining mild days for outdoor plans, preparing for travel delays, protecting plants and watching for overnight ground frost over the weekend as the pattern turns cooler and more changeable.
