Overview
- USGS measured the shallow quake at magnitude 6.9 at 9:59 p.m. local time, centered offshore near Bogo in Cebu close to Palompon, at roughly 10 km depth.
- Local authorities reported injuries and building collapses in northern Cebu, with at least one death in Medellin and damage to heritage churches, a commercial building and a school.
- Power outages and cracked roads were reported across Cebu and neighboring islands as firefighters and medical teams mobilized.
- PHIVOLCS initially advised people to avoid coasts in Cebu, Leyte and Biliran before lifting the advisory, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat.
- Multiple aftershocks, including several magnitude-5 tremors, followed the mainshock, and USGS models estimate more than half a million people experienced very strong shaking.
