Strong 6.9 Quake Strikes Central Philippines, Damages Buildings in Cebu

Rescuers deploy across northern Cebu following the cancellation of a local tsunami alert.

Overview

  • USGS measured the shallow quake at magnitude 6.9 at 9:59 p.m. local time, centered offshore near Bogo in Cebu close to Palompon, at roughly 10 km depth.
  • Local authorities reported injuries and building collapses in northern Cebu, with at least one death in Medellin and damage to heritage churches, a commercial building and a school.
  • Power outages and cracked roads were reported across Cebu and neighboring islands as firefighters and medical teams mobilized.
  • PHIVOLCS initially advised people to avoid coasts in Cebu, Leyte and Biliran before lifting the advisory, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat.
  • Multiple aftershocks, including several magnitude-5 tremors, followed the mainshock, and USGS models estimate more than half a million people experienced very strong shaking.
