Stratus Covid Variant Surges as UK Narrows Autumn Booster to High-Risk Groups

Appointments open on 1 October for over-75s, care-home residents and immunosuppressed people.

Overview

  • UKHSA’s autumn 2025 programme focuses on adults 75+, residents of older-adult care homes and immunosuppressed individuals aged 6 months and over, with doses generally offered about six months after the previous jab.
  • The NHS says eligible people can book from 1 October without an invitation via the website, NHS App, walk-in sites, community pharmacies, GP surgeries or in care homes.
  • Ireland’s HPSC reports Stratus now accounts for 76.1% of documented infections, after the strain made up around 40% of cases in England in June.
  • Reports describe a hoarse or gravelly voice as a common early sign of Stratus before more typical Covid symptoms appear.
  • Severely immunosuppressed patients may be assessed for extra doses, and those with significant allergy risks can be referred for specialist-monitored vaccination, while guidance advises staying home if you have Covid and notes most people cannot get free tests.
