Storm Surge Batters German North Sea as ‘Detlef’ Disrupts Ferries

Hamburg reported flooding at low elevations, with forecasters expecting a gradual easing Monday.

Overview

  • The BSH logged coastal water rises of roughly 1.5 to 2.0 meters above mean high tide and forecast a higher Elbe peak in Hamburg near the St. Pauli gauge, flooding the Fish Market and other low-lying areas around the 16:03 high-water mark.
  • Ferry links were curtailed or halted on multiple routes, including Helgoland’s Halunder Jet, services between Schlüttsiel and the Halligen, adjusted Sylt ferry schedules, and cancellations on Rostock–Gedser.
  • Emergency services reported several injuries in Germany, including two people seriously hurt by a fallen tree in the South Black Forest, additional injuries in Rhineland-Palatinate, and weather-hampered rescues in the Harz.
  • Islands and ports saw localized flooding and erosion, with a Norderney campground inundated, dune and strand damage on Langeoog and Wangerooge, and vehicles caught in high water in Cuxhaven.
  • The DWD expects winds to ease on Monday as the low weakens, with lingering rain, persistent showers in the north, and snow in the Alps above roughly 1,500 meters.
