Storm Keeps Catalonia on Flood and Avalanche Alert as Rivers Swell and Ski Areas Close

Officials warn of very abundant rain in the northeast that could push river levels higher through Saturday.

Overview

  • Meteocat forecasts exceptionally heavy rainfall in Girona, with up to 200 liters per square meter in 24 hours and totals near 300 over the episode, alongside rough seas with waves around four meters.
  • Protecció Civil keeps the Inuncat flood plan in alert phase and urges the public to stay away from waterways, noting it may issue an ES-Alert if overflows threaten.
  • The Catalan Water Agency reports several rivers above alert or danger thresholds, including the Tordera at Fogars at 183 m³/s, with the Onyar, Fluvià and Ges also running high.
  • Avalanche danger is rated strong (level 4/5) in Ter-Freser and nearby massifs, and the ski areas of Vallter and Vall de Núria remain closed after 50–75 centimeters of new snow.
  • Mountain travel is constrained with chains required on key routes and closures at Coll de Pal for snow and wind and between Vilafant and Borrassà for flooding.
