Storm Goretti Triggers UK Rail Closures, Reduced Timetables and ‘Do Not Travel’ Alerts

Many suspended routes have no replacement buses due to dangerous road conditions.

Overview

  • Amber Met Office snow warnings are in force for 8–9 January across large parts of England and Wales, with forecasts of up to 30cm in places.
  • Transport for Wales will close multiple lines from around 3pm today and run a reduced service elsewhere, with no rail replacement on many routes because roads are unsafe.
  • The Hope Valley line between Manchester and Sheffield shuts from 6pm today through Friday, and Northern is closing the Buxton, Glossop/Hadfield and New Mills Central–Sheffield routes with ‘do not travel’ notices into Saturday.
  • Intercity and regional operators are thinning schedules from mid‑afternoon, including Avanti West Coast and CrossCountry from 3pm, West Midlands Railway from 7pm, GWR cancellations between Oxford and Hereford, and a 50% Chiltern timetable on Friday.
  • Network Rail is deploying de‑icing, snow and ice treatment trains, and chainsaw teams, while advising passengers to check before they travel, use ticket easements, and, where possible, complete journeys earlier.
