Storm Damage Severely Disrupts Barcelona-Valencia Rail Corridor Through Monday

Repairs have reached the tamping phase without a confirmed reopening time.

Overview

  • Renfe canceled up to 27 trains on Monday after Adif closed several stretches of the corridor in Tarragona and Castellón.
  • Inspections found flooded track and washed-out ballast between Ulldecona and L’Aldea, with repair trains deployed including nine ballast hoppers, a profiladora and a bateadora.
  • A lightning strike in Benicarló damaged signalling and safety systems, and Adif is replacing electronic cards, cabling and connections.
  • Rodalies R16 remains suspended between Tortosa and Ulldecona, and Renfe has set up road replacement between Tortosa and Vinaròs to link with services toward Valencia.
  • Adif has paused gauge-change works between Benicarló and Alcalà de Xivert to prioritize recovery, and says the timeline depends on weather and full-line inspections.
