Storm Damage Extends Mediterranean Rail Outage to 17:00 as Fatality Stops MadridValladolid AVE

Adif has deployed work trains plus about 100 technicians to rebuild washed-out ballast, replace lightning-damaged signalling, restore service.

Overview

  • Adif prolonged the suspension on sections of the TarragonaCastellón corridor until at least 17:00 after fresh inspections revealed greater damage than expected.
  • Crews are repairing a severely affected stretch between Ulldecona and L’Aldea that includes about 150 meters where the ballast was completely washed away.
  • Three ballast hopper trains, a profiler and a tamper are on site, with another hopper train sent to Moncofa to load material under complex operating constraints.
  • A lightning strike at Benicarló damaged signalling systems, prompting replacement of electronic cards, cabling and connections, and catenary power was restored overnight between Santa Magdalena de Pulpís and Benicarló.
  • Separately, an Alvia struck a person between Olmedo and Valdestillas, stopping the MadridValladolid high-speed line as authorities conduct forensic procedures, with the transport minister reporting a growing count of affected trains.
