Storm Claudia Triggers Amber Warnings, Flood Alerts and Rail Cutbacks Across England and Wales

Up to a month’s rain in 24 hours on saturated ground is driving safety pleas, flood alerts, emergency preparations and power‑loss risks.

Overview

  • Amber rain warnings are in force from midday to midnight for parts of Wales, the Midlands, the South West, the South East and eastern England, with wider yellow warnings elsewhere.
  • Forecast totals include 60–80mm of rain widely and above 150mm on higher ground in Wales, with gusts reaching 60–70mph in exposed parts of northwest England and northwest Wales.
  • The Environment Agency reports multiple flood warnings and more than 100 alerts nationwide, with fast‑flowing or deep floodwater possible and some communities at risk of being cut off.
  • National Rail and operators including Avanti West Coast, Northern, CrossCountry, Chiltern, London Northwestern and West Midlands Railway are running reduced services, with cancellations, speed restrictions and a line closure between Exeter and Barnstaple due to flooding.
  • Emergency responders and charities such as the British Red Cross are on standby, while the AA, RAC and safety bodies urge people to reconsider travel, avoid driving through floodwater and prepare flood kits.
