Storm Ciaran Lashes Europe: Record-Breaking Winds Leave Millions Without Power and Five Dead

Intense Storm Ciaran wreaks havoc across Europe with winds over 180 kph, causing widespread property damage, disruption to transportation and daily life; extreme weather might be the autumn's worst in over a century.

  • Storm Ciaran, possibly the worst autumn storm in Europe in over a century, led to the deaths of five individuals and left millions without electricity. Winds exceeded 180 kilometers per hour, uprooting trees and causing widespread damage and transportation disruption.
  • Over 1.2 million French households lost power, especially in Brittany, the hardest-hit region where approximately half of the homes were impacted. France's electrical utility Enedis is deploying 3,000 workers for power restoration.
  • The storm devastation included the United Kingdom as well, with thousands suffering power outages and severe transportation disruptions. The British Environment Agency issued 82 flood warnings and 197 flood alerts due to high river levels and saturated ground.
  • In Spain, the storm resulted in the death of a woman after a tree fell on her. The heavy rains and gale-force winds led to the closure of parks and the cancellation of several trains and flights.
  • The extreme weather conditions also led to the cancellation of all flights in the Netherlands by the national airline, KLM, citing high sustained wind speeds and powerful gusts.
