Storm Ciaran Expected to Batter Southern England with Heavy Rains and High-speed Winds: Flood Warnings Issued

Winds associated with the storm could gust up to 90mph along the coast, with heavy rains causing "significant coastal flooding"; the third major storm this season follows Storm Babet, which resulted in multiple deaths last week.

  • The Met Office has issued a warning for the southern region of England to brace for heavy rains and high-speed winds due to Storm Ciaran, which could gust up to 90mph along the coast and up to 60mph inland.
  • The Environment Agency has already put out 72 flood warnings in the South West, advising residents to prepare for substantial coastal flooding. The towns of Truro, Falmouth, and Looe in Cornwall were most severely impact by the ongoing weather conditions.
  • The effects of Storm Ciaran follow the devastating impact of Storm Babet the previous week, which led to significant damage and multiple deaths. Forecasters caution that the present storms could disrupt roads and public transport, as well as pose risks to life in flood-prone regions.
  • Already, areas of Sussex have reportedly seen flooding, with evacuations required at sites such as the Priory Meadow Shopping Centre in Hastings. Other incidents include a caravan park and a supermarket parking lot left beneath water in Bognor Regis.
  • World of deteriorating weather will persist throughout the week, with the Met Office yellow warning remaining in effect beyond Wednesday. To compound problems, a deep area of low pressure is set to arrive by Thursday, heralding the official arrival of Storm Ciaran and potentially intensifying the rain and wind impact in southern England and Wales.
