Overview
- The Met Office kept multiple amber and yellow alerts active on Tuesday, with early rain warnings in south Wales and southwest England and an evening amber wind warning for northwest Scotland forecasting gusts up to 90 mph, as the worst rain in the southwest eased by afternoon.
- Rainfall totals in the southwest were exceptional, with 111.5 mm recorded at White Barrow in Devon after typical falls of 50–75 mm in the amber zones increased the likelihood of surface and river flooding.
- Environment agencies reported more than 30 flood warnings in England, 20 in Scotland and dozens of alerts in Wales, underscoring elevated risk on already saturated catchments.
- Transport disruption was widespread: British Airways cancelled early domestic departures at Heathrow, Belfast City grounded at least 18 flights, Dublin Airport cancelled 73 services, and Scottish routes between Fort William–Mallaig and Dingwall–Kyle were suspended with broader speed restrictions in place.
- Authorities urged the public to secure outdoor items, prepare emergency and flood kits, review travel plans and delay non‑essential journeys, with the RAC warning of hazardous driving conditions from debris, spray and strong crosswinds.
