Storage King Facility Fire in Burpengary Contained After Overnight Response

Authorities revoked the exclusion zone Thursday morning following a massive blaze that sent toxic smoke across roads, hospitalising a local resident.

Overview

  • The fire broke out around 6 pm Wednesday at the Storage King facility on Old Gympie Road north of Brisbane, completely destroying the building.
  • Queensland Police issued a Public Safety Preservation Act declaration after 7 pm and set an exclusion zone on New Settlement, Pitt, Bellini, Twists and Old Bay roads.
  • At least 75 firefighters from 26 crews battled the blaze until it was brought under control, leading to the revocation of the emergency declaration just after 2 am Thursday.
  • A 67-year-old nearby resident was hospitalised in stable condition with smoke inhalation and two others received treatment at the scene.
  • Authorities estimate the damage bill will reach into the millions and have launched investigations into the cause of the fire.
