Stolen Mandolins Returned to N.J. Shop With Apology Note as Police Investigation Continues

Police are investigating the anonymous return of two stolen mandolins to a Teaneck music store.

Overview

  • Surveillance footage from Dec. 22 showed a man concealing a Gibson F-12 and a Weber Yellowstone before leaving Lark Street Music.
  • The instruments, worth about $7,750 combined, were left in shopping bags with a handwritten note reading, "SORRY, I BEEN DRUNK, MERRY CHRISTMAS. You are good man."
  • Owner Buzzy Levine said the door opened briefly on Dec. 26, he spotted the drop-off, chased the person he believed returned them, and then called police.
  • Teaneck police say no arrests have been made and the mandolins are being held as evidence while the investigation continues.
  • The store’s Facebook post with the surveillance video and a note about a Montenegrin accent drew broad attention that the owner credits with pressuring the return.
