• Race officials said she became unwell during training in Ethiopia and died after being taken to a hospital in the Addis Ababa area.
• The adidas Stockholm Marathon announced her death in a statement posted on social media.
• Alene won the 31 May 2025 Stockholm Marathon in 2:30:38 after recording a personal best of 2:29:34 at the Tata Mumbai Marathon in January.
• Reports note she had lived in Mexico and previously in New York, and she was training in Ethiopia at the time she fell ill.
• Team-mates and coaches remembered her as a determined athlete and role model, and no medical cause of death has been released.
