Stiftung Warentest Rates 7 Olive Oils 'Good,' None Achieve 'Very Good'
A new test of 25 extra virgin olive oils highlights quality disparities, with affordable options outperforming some premium brands.
- Stiftung Warentest evaluated 25 extra virgin olive oils, with seven receiving a 'good' rating, an improvement from the previous year's results.
- Rewe's 'Beste Wahl' olive oil ranked first with a score of 2.1, priced at 15.98 euros per liter, followed by two Aldi products in second and third place, both costing under 10 euros per liter.
- Three oils, including Fiore, dm Bio, and La EspaƱola, were rated 'poor' due to off-putting flavors and, in some cases, rancidity or contamination issues.
- The test revealed that expensive olive oils are not always superior, as the priciest oil in the study contained mineral oil contaminants despite its excellent taste.
- Despite challenges like climate-related poor harvests, olive oil prices have started to decline, with further reductions anticipated in the coming months.
