STF Halts Order Forcing Globo–Gazeta Deal as Broadcast Moves to TV Asa Branca

Barroso cited use of Gazeta’s corporate structure to mask illicit funds, calling forced renewal a risk to legal certainty in radiodiffusion.

Overview

  • Globo ended its decades-long affiliation with TV Gazeta and, from midnight on September 27, began transmitting in Alagoas through TV Asa Branca, which is based in Caruaru.
  • TV Gazeta continued to air Globo programming despite the rescission, according to O Antagonista, while Globo stated that Asa Branca is its only authorized retransmitter in the state.
  • The Ministry of Communications and the Prosecutor General’s Office supported the suspension, citing the presence of criminally convicted partners at Gazeta.
  • The STJ had upheld a compulsory five-year extension of the affiliation, and Gazeta, in judicial reorganization since 2019, warned the breakup could push the group toward bankruptcy.
  • Poder360 reported that Barroso’s suspension remains in effect until the underlying case reaches a final judgment, emphasizing broadcaster autonomy and sector stability.
