STF First Panel Sets Feb. 24–25, 2026 Trial in Marielle Franco Case

The dates follow Moraes’s determination that the case is ready for judgment.

Overview

  • In-person hearings will span two extraordinary morning sessions on February 24 and 25 and an ordinary afternoon session on February 24, dedicated exclusively to the case.
  • Five defendants will be tried on allegations of planning the killings: Chiquinho Brazão, Domingos Brazão, Rivaldo Barbosa, Ronald Paulo Alves Pereira and Robson Calixto Fonseca.
  • The Procuradoria-Geral da República has asked for convictions for qualified homicide, attempted homicide and criminal organization.
  • Plea deals by convicted executors Ronnie Lessa and Élcio de Queiroz underpin the accusations, and Federal Police link the motive to Marielle’s opposition to interests tied to militia-controlled land.
  • All five defendants remain under preventive detention measures and deny involvement, including in recent interrogations taken before the case was released for judgment.
