Overview
- A founding guitarist of Booker T. & the MG's, he helped define the Memphis soul sound as part of Stax Records' house band.
- Beyond his guitar work, he served in A&R and production at Stax, shaping recordings for Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Rufus and Carla Thomas, and Eddie Floyd.
- His songwriting and production credits include Green Onions, Soul-Limbo and Time Is Tight, as well as co-writing (Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay, which became a landmark posthumous No. 1 for Redding.
- After leaving Stax in 1970, he collaborated widely and reached broader audiences as the lead guitarist with the Blues Brothers on Saturday Night Live, albums and films.
- He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and remained active with a Grammy-nominated 2021 album and a 2024 release.
