Sterling Heights Roundabout Tops 2024 List of Michigan’s Most Crash-Prone Roundabouts

The ranking uses 2024 state police crash records without adjusting for traffic volume.

Overview

  • Michigan Auto Law released a Jan. 15 analysis of the 10 roundabouts with the most crashes in 2024 based on Michigan State Police data.
  • 18½ Mile Road at Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights led the list with 162 crashes and 12 injuries, followed by Martin Parkway at North Pontiac Trail in Commerce Township with 151 crashes and 9 injuries.
  • Most of the high-crash locations are clustered in Metro Detroit, with additional sites in Ann Arbor, Kalamazoo and Portage.
  • An MDOT study finds that converting intersections to roundabouts reduces fatal crashes but increases total crash counts.
  • Michigan Auto Law notes that injuries can be undercounted in scene reports, and MLive reports four of the top five sites saw fewer crashes than in 2023 except Sterling Heights, which rose about 20%.
