- The England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed on Thursday that Stephen Fleming will be men’s Test head coach after a formal recruitment process and that Joe Root has been reappointed full-time Test captain.
- Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim head coach for the three-Test series against Pakistan starting August 19 because Fleming will not join the set-up until later in the summer.
- Fleming ends an 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings and is travelling to the UK to begin preparations for the December tour of South Africa rather than taking immediate charge of the Pakistan series.
- The appointments follow Ben Stokes’s retirement and a run of poor Test results that cost Brendon McCullum the red-ball role while McCullum will remain England’s white-ball coach.
- The ECB is betting Fleming’s long franchise record and past leadership as New Zealand captain can restore culture and results, but his recent work has been mostly in T20s so rebuilding Test balance ahead of the 2027 Ashes is a key early priority.
