Stellantis Commits $13 Billion to U.S. Production, Reopens Belvidere and Adds 5,000 Jobs

The package reflects a push to blunt U.S. auto tariffs that Stellantis says will cost about €1.7 billion this year.

Overview

  • Stellantis says the four-year plan will lift U.S. output by 50% and create more than 5,000 jobs across Illinois, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana.
  • Belvidere, Illinois, will reopen with more than $600 million invested to build the Jeep Cherokee and Jeep Compass starting in 2027, adding about 3,300 jobs and shifting Compass production from Brampton, Ontario.
  • Toledo, Ohio, will get a $400 million allocation to assemble a new midsize truck in 2028, bringing roughly 900 jobs, while Kokomo, Indiana, will produce the new GMET4 EVO engine beginning in 2026 with over $100 million invested and about 100 jobs.
  • Warren Truck in Michigan is slated to build a large SUV in both range‑extended EV and gasoline versions starting in 2028, and Detroit will produce the next‑generation Dodge Durango in 2029.
  • The announcement deemphasizes full battery EVs, drew praise from the UAW and U.S. officials, prompted criticism from Canadian unions and leaders over the Brampton shift, and lifted U.S.-listed shares about 6–7% after hours.
