Steelers Activate Wide Receiver Diontae Johnson, Place Tight End Pat Freiermuth on Injured Reserve with Hamstring Injury

Johnson returns after missing five weeks; Freiermuth's recurring injury will bench him for at least four games.

  • The Pittsburgh Steelers have activated wide receiver Diontae Johnson from injured reserve, clearing him to play in the team's Week 7 game against the Los Angeles Rams. Johnson suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1 and has missed five weeks of play.
  • Johnson's return is significant for the Steelers' offense, which currently ranks near the bottom of the league in nearly every major statistical category. Over the past three years, Johnson has been the Steelers' leading receiver.
  • While Johnson is set to return, tight end Pat Freiermuth will be out of the game, placed on injured reserve following an aggravated hamstring injury. He is expected to miss at least four games.
  • Freiermuth's absence could impact the Steelers' passing game greatly. He scored seven touchdowns as a rookie and was a significant part of the passing game last season.
  • In the meantime, the Steelers have also waived wide receiver/kick returner Gunner Olszewski due to struggles with ball security and consistent play.
