Statewide Breath Tests Lead to 7 MSRTC Suspensions and Plan for Alcohol Sensors in New Buses

The order followed complaints about on‑duty drinking at the state-run bus operator.

Overview

  • On October 28, the MSRTC Security and Vigilance Department conducted unannounced, statewide alcohol checks on minister Pratap Sarnaik’s directive.
  • A total of 1,701 employees were tested using breath analysers, including 719 drivers, 524 conductors and 458 mechanical staff.
  • Seven staffers tested positive — three drivers, one conductor, two mechanics and one cleaner — across depots in Dhule, Nashik, Parbhani, Bhandara and Nanded.
  • All seven were suspended and issued charge sheets, with a detailed inspection report to be submitted to MSRTC’s central office in Mumbai.
  • MSRTC announced continued surprise drives and said all newly procured buses will carry breath analysers near the driver seat to test before ignition.
