States Finalize Diwali School Holidays as Karnataka Shuts Schools for Survey

Overview

  • Across much of India, schools are observing a common festive window from Dhanteras on Oct 18 through Bhai Dooj on Oct 23, though exact dates vary by state.
  • Rajasthan has notified a 12-day break from Oct 13 to Oct 24, giving one of the longest Diwali vacations this year.
  • Uttar Pradesh has set school holidays for Oct 20–23, while Bihar’s break starts Oct 20 and extends through Chhath Puja, with many calendars running to Oct 29.
  • Karnataka schools are closed Oct 8–18 to free teachers for the statewide social and educational (caste) survey; the state calendar currently lists Oct 22 for Deepavali/Balipadyami and officials may adjust for the Oct 20/21 tithi split.
  • Andhra Pradesh and Telangana schools are expected to close for Diwali around Oct 20, with an extra day in Telangana on Oct 21 reported as likely but not yet confirmed, and some districts are issuing separate short closures for weather or official visits, so families should check local notices.
