Staten Island Man Charged After Throwing 1-Year-Old Niece Down Garbage Chute

Pulled from the chute by her parents after a three-floor fall, the toddler remains hospitalized in stable condition with only minor abrasions.

Overview

  • Prosecutors on July 23 indicted 39-year-old Aaron Henderson on assault, unlawful imprisonment and endangering the welfare of a child for the incident at Park Hill’s 195 Steuben Street building.
  • Authorities say Henderson, the girl’s uncle who has autism, was taken for a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation and declared competent to stand trial.
  • The one-year-old was allegedly placed in the trash chute at around 3:15 p.m. on Monday and fell to the first floor before being located.
  • Her parents heard her cries, broke open the basement chute door to rescue her and she was treated at Staten Island University Hospital North Campus.
  • The NYPD investigation remains active as Henderson awaits arraignment in Richmond County Criminal Court.
